LET’S MAKE THE CONNECTIONS CLEAR.

“Make a ten” is easy to say. Let’s unpack how to teach it.

You model it with counters. Your students try it. Then comes the question: do they understand why it works, or are they following your moves?

Together, we’ll work through using ten to add and subtract, connecting each counter movement to a drawing and an equation. You’ll practice questions that reveal students’ understanding and consider what to offer when a connection isn’t clear.

Bring counters and paper. Leave with teaching moves you can use in your next lesson, plus Teaching Tools and Number Talks to help you get started.

YOU CAN SEE HOW TEN HELPS. HELP THEM SEE IT, TOO.

You move the counters. Draw the model. Record the equation.

But connecting those pieces isn’t always straightforward for students, and finding another way to explain it can leave you feeling stuck.

Let’s work through those connections together, so you have purposeful models, useful questions, and a clearer next move when “make a ten” hasn’t clicked yet.
