Description
Independence plays such a role in our lives as Primary Teachers. We want students to be independently thinking and reflecting on their work.
I created these writing checklists for my own 1st graders for our Work-on-Writing time during Daily 5. With these checklists, students’ work was more focused and developed. As students worked, they would grab a checklist and staple it to the corner of their writing. Before sharing writing with our class or asking for a friend’s feedback, students were expected to reflect on their own work.
Included in this resource…
*Anchor-Chart Checklists
- 5-Star Writing
- Narrative
- Opinion
- Inform/explain
- How-To Writing
- Open-response writing
*Student Checklists (4-to-a-page) for each mode of writing
*Student-to-Student Feedback Form/Reflection
- 1/2 page option (a celebration and a question)
- 1/4 page option (letter format)
These checklists are classroom tested and approved. They are ideal for focusing your students’ writing and writing towards a goal.

It is very helpful to have these checklists out in my class near the writing centre. This way students can freely write but are reminded of what different forms of writing should look like.

These checklists helped my students take responsibility of their work. I like how the checklist is for different writing skills. My students liked having the checklist.

Love this resource as it makes it easy to assess and grade writing quickly. I’m able to see what the student needs more support with and have a conference to provide explicit feedback

I put these on coloured paper, laminated them, and put them in my student’s work books. They could check their own writing before bringing it to me! Was really simple and helpful for teaching them to edit their own work.

We added these checklists to the student’s Resource Folders for easy independent access. We also post the poster size one in the work space, while we are on the topic to reinforce the needed concepts.
