Description
Word study matters. Explicit and systematic phonics instruction is critical for our emerging readers. Direct instruction has to be a component of our reading blocks, as well as, opportunities for students to use and apply sounds.
16 Read-the-Room Cards (a, e, i, o, u)
3 Differentiated Recording Sheets – perfect for all levels of learners
-Level 1: Match & Write the Short Vowel
-Level 2: Placing the Short Vowel Word in a Sentence
-Level 3: Using the Short Vowel Word in my own Sentences
1 Exit Slip (reading and writing short vowels)
This Short Vowel Hunt would work as a whole-class activity or be a great practice activity during your literacy block. I’ll use this hunt during our Daily 5 block as a Word-Work choice. I keep my recording logs in colored folders. Students know when they go to Word Work to take a recording sheet out of the green (Level 1), yellow (Level 2), or blue (Level 3) folder.
Students love hunting our room for the skills we are learning. It keeps students up and moving – which is perfect for our primary classrooms.
Happy Teaching ,
Catherine – The Brown Bag Teacher
