Presidents Day in the Classroom

Since this school year coincided with an election year, we will not spend a lot of time on President’s Day next week. Still, we will throw in some small things here and there. When students finish a task early or we have a few spare moments, students check out the browsing box on the carpet. The browsing box is full of 20 or so books related to any topics we are learning about or upcoming holidays. Our friends LOVE looking through the browsing box with their friends and they would stay there all morning if we let them.

President’s Day Reading

Last week, Browsing Box contained books about space, as well as, Three Little Pig books. This week, we’ll add Valentine and Presidents Day books. Here are some of the ones I picked up at the public library this afternoon! (click on the pictures to check them out).
Some of my favorite are – Abe Crosses a Creek, Ellie May on President’s Day, P is for President, Abe Crosses a Creek, The Little Book of Presidential Elections, and The Liberty Bell. 

Learning About Symbols of America

From bald eagles to the White House to the flag – American has quiet a few unique images and places that hold a lot of value. As a part of our President’s Day learning, we will learn about popular American symbols and then decide, as a class, what another American symbol could be. We use our paragraph writing to structure our thinking and it’s the perfect way to dip our toes into opinion writing.

Sending Mail to the White House

During my student-teaching year, we also got some VERY exciting mail just in time for President’s Day! In October, we wrote questions to the President (as we worked on asking sentence). A few months later a large yellow envelope arrived. We received a letter, picture, and information about our President and the Presidential dog! Sitting around our class carpet and carefully passing around our treasures it was such a sweet moment to see the wide eyes of 22 seven-year olds. (Note – it typically takes 3-5 months to get mail back from the White House, so as soon as you see this – DO IT!)

    I'm the queen of laminating too. I always call myself the lamination queen. I've never tried to make mine stand up, but I'm sure they would too. Don't you hate the cutting though?
