My students {love} sports and between rec teams and AAU teams, it seems they spend most of their afternoons and weekends involved in some type of athletic event. Additionally, being a Kentuckian, basketball is serious business. UK rules. No questions asked. This makes March the perfect month to merge our love of basketball and our love of amazing books.

In this download, you’ll find the materials you needs to create a Tournament of Books in your classroom – directions, pictures, book placeholders, and a link to an editable bracket.

This is a creative and engaging resource that gets students excited about reading through a fun tournament-style book challenge. I like that the bulletin board encourages students to compare books, share opinions, and build enthusiasm for reading while creating an interactive classroom display. Perfect for classroom libraries, reading celebrations, literacy centers, bulletin boards, or school-wide reading events. This Book Battle resource brought our K–8 school community together in the best way! Everything was clearly organized and easy to adapt across grade levels. The students were so motivated to read, discuss, and cheer each other on, and the competitive element made it even more exciting!

The materials made setup simple, and I appreciated the flexibility to tweak things based on class needs. It sparked great conversations about books, built school spirit, and made reading feel like a team sport. We already have staff asking if we can make it a yearly tradition!

If you’re looking for a way to build reading excitement school wide, this is it. Thank you!

My download is a .zip file. How do I open it?

Each resource downloads as a .zip folder that holds all of its files.

  • iPhone or iPad: open the Files app, find the zip in Downloads, and tap it. It unzips into a folder you can open.

My file won’t open or shows a file-path error.

This usually happens on Windows when the files are unzipped inside the Downloads folder, because the folder path gets too long. Move the zip to your Desktop, then right-click it and choose Extract All.
