Melting Crayons: A Valentine’s Treet

Hello, friends. I am joining 4th Grade Froclics for “Monday Made It.” My first linky party!

How cute, right? I was SO excited to make these beauties and was only a tad disappointed at how labour intensive they were. My first batch definitely took longer because I was learning the ropes. You can snag some great instructions here. Here are my tips for making the process MUCH fast! 🙂 My three major mistakes were….

Mistake #1: Using a silicone ice mold from the Target dollar section (that now actually includes $2 and $3 items L). The melted crayons popped out easily but left the mold covered in wax that I was unable to clean off. Next time, I will buy a real silicone baking mold or try using a muffin tin with cupcake liners.

Mistake #2: Mixing brands of crayons. Off-brand crayons did not melt at the same rate as Crayola crayons. They were MUCH slower, but you know what they say about a watched crayon in the oven…The longer you leave the crayons in the oven after they are melted, the more the colors mixed.

Mistake #3: Using purple crayons. They turned the hearts black!

Regardless, my friends (what my cooperating teacher and I call the students) will LOVE them – I’m positive. First graders get so excited about school supplies. It’s one of the many reasons first grade is for me. 🙂

I used Martha Stewart’s
directions for these heart crayons!
Shout-out to Kevin and Amanda for the great font!

Plus, I’ll attached them to the Valentine (click here to snag the valentine) I made and whala – Valentine treats that do not cause cavities ready 38 days early!

Woohoo for a first Monday Made It! Thanks to Tara for hosting 🙂

Hi Traci! I hope it works out perfectly for you. Heather (above) said it worked perfectly with muffin tins, so I would definitely try that instead of silicone trays. Good luck 🙂
