Hi, friends! So, our school-wide math night was a huge success. While parents were in 30 minute math classes, our students had a blast with math games and activities throughout the school.
We saw about 40 of our 120 1st grade families, which was great! Our half-hour session focused on two main things -explaining the why behind our methods and answering parent questions/concerns.
Our families asked great questions –
- Why do students need to do things multiple ways?
- Why are students not being taught regrouping in 1st grade? It seems so much harder without it.
- Why are we not seeing a lot of math homework?
As teachers, the structured section of our presentation looked like this (you can download the presentation as a PDF here)-
- Common Core vs. math curriculum
- What does a 60 minute math class look like?
- What are the ‘core’ skills we’ll be teaching this year and why.
- How can you help? Resources for families
It really was a fantastic evening! As a parting ‘gift’ we gave parents this handout that gives a breakdown of much of the math language we’ll be using this year and a little background on what their students will be learning. If you think your school or parents would find this helpful, feel free to download it from TPT (at no cost) and share it. 🙂

Our curriculum night is tomorrow! Thanks for this!! I would like to do another night that focuses just on math. But for tomorrow we will discuss our goals in May and how the standards build. Parents will get to travel to the different classes just like their kids do! I am going to see how I can sneak your great resource in!! 🙂

So sweet! Thank YOU, Lisa. 🙂
We have our Math Nght next month but it's an hour long. Would you be able to share a power point or notes about what you shared with parents? I'm presenting alone to our Kdg families and am getting a little nervous.
Does a third grade version of this exist? I love it!
My son was born with a short left arm with no hand and your pool noodle card holder is going to be great for him. I will just attach an elastic loop so he can attach it to his short arm. Thanks for the great idea.

DR. ODUNGA IS THE BEST SPIRITUALIST ONLINE WHO RESTORED MY BROKEN RELATIONSHIP AND I HIGHLY RECOMMENDS DR. ODUNGA TO ANYONE IN NEED OF HELP! My husband left me for another woman 3 months ago and ever since then my life has been filled with pain, sorrow and heart break because he was my first love whom I have spent my entire life with. A friend of mine told me he saw some testimonies of a spiritualist called Dr Odunga that he can bring back lover within some few days, i laugh it out and said i am not interested but because of the love my friend had for me, she consulted this great man on my behalf and to my greatest surprise after 11hours my husband called me for the very first time after three months that he is missing me and that he is so sorry for every thing he made me went through. He came back to me and now we are happy together. I still can’t believe it, because it’s highly unbelievable. Thank you Dr.Odunga for bringing back my lover and also to my lovely friend who interceded on my behalf, for any one who might need the help of this great spiritualist here is the email address: [email protected], you can also add him on Whats’app: +2348167159012
