For instance, to introduce the concept of an unknown, teachers might ask students to figure out how many blocks are hidden in a box if they can see that the total number of blocks is 9 and they already have 3 outside the box.

Kindergarten through 2nd-grade teachers can encourage students to identify, extend, and create patterns using various objects like colored tiles, buttons, or drawings.
