Book Madness: A Tournament of Books

Happy Snow Week, friends! With 12ish inches of snow on the ground, I wanted to stop by and share an updated file that many friends have been asking for – 2017 Tournament of Books!

Last year, one of my 5th grade highlights was our Book Madness – Tournament of Books. My 5th graders were ALL about March Madness and ALL about UK, so it was the perfect time to channel their competitive spirits in the name of great chapter books! This year in 1st grade, I’ll still host a tournament using picture books!

To see how I structured our classroom tournament and set-up our class display, click here or on the picture below.
To read about and see how we voted using Socrative Assessment and what book was the 2014 Book of the Year, click here or the picture below!

So, are your READy???? You can snag the materials to set-up your tournament of books free at my TpT store here. So, are your ready for Book Madness?!? If so, I’d love to hear any ideas or books that will be on your bracket this year! ๐Ÿ™‚

I loved this idea and used it last year. Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen won the whole tournament!

I just have to say that it would hurt my heart to have to vote between Wonder and One and Only Ivan. Pairing them together is evil ๐Ÿ™‚

    I love this idea, though!

Socrative is THEBOMBDOTCOM!!! I used it ever.single.day last year teaching 5th grade. You get all kids of great data and since the update (over the summer), it has some crazy-awesome features. I wrote about the older version last fall here – http://thebrownbagteacher.blogspot.com/2013/10/socrative-and-superintendents.html

I just created a Socrative account – but how did you use it to vote? Just trying to get a picture of what the structure looked like as I get ready to do my very first tournament of books ๐Ÿ™‚

I'm so grateful you put all of your ideas about this book tournament out there! I'm not ashamed to say I'm borrowing them ๐Ÿ™‚ But I am also wondering how you use Socrative. I use it frequently, but there is no survery/vote feature, so did you just make a quiz?

Thank you for sharing! As soon as I saw this my wheels started turning and now we are doing this as a school. We've got our bracket up in the cafeteria and are using Google Forms for voting. I haven't had a breath yet to write about it and the snow has slowed some parts down, but it's really very exciting. This was just such an awesome idea and I'm so glad you shared!
