Following the Trail: Point of View!

Are you up for an adventure this week?  A number of fellow intermediate teacher-bloggers have teamed up for blog-hopping fun this last week of January.  Snow probably covers the ground where you are reading this from, making a real outdoor hike out of the question…so we are providing a trail for you to “hike” from the comfort of your couch! All each stop in the trail, you’ll meet some amazing intermediate bloggers, learn about some amazing resources, and have the opportunity to win some fantastic products for your kiddos!

I am SO excited to say that I was partnered with the amazing Deb Hanson from Crafting Connections.  Deb’s resources are always spot on. As a first-year teacher
at a school sans curriculum there are many times when I am not sure what 5th
grade should look like. I love Deb’s products because they give me such a
comprehensive look at a standard. Her point of view teaching bundle was no
different. From introductory PowerPoints, task cards, independent practicepassages, and flowcharts – her resources were a fantastic guide for my students
(and me)!
We started out using her AMAZING Snapshots PowerPoint. Full of 67 slides and an accompanying student guide, students were given a “formula” for identifying point of view which is wonderful, especially for my co-teaching class. Plus, with 67 slides, student were given LOTS of examples for each type of point of view!

After learning about the different types of point of view, we needed to practice as groups. I always make sure to add in some sort of group practice when introducing short answers. These “group writes” are always done using a Kagan structure to ensure that every member of the group is involved. With the “positive interdependence”, every student is engaged! To make this happened, I cut Deb’s Lewis and Clark’s practice passages and attached them to chart paper. Did you know if you have your kids do something on chart paper it doesn’t count as real work? That kids will do anything that involves larger-than-life writing? Hahaha – well, it’s true!

Each group reviewed a different passage and responded to the question – “From what point of view is the passage told?” and then, we shared our short answers as a class! Here is my teacher model.

Transitioning from group to independent work, we used Deb’s POV flowchart to identify point of view in different fiction and nonfiction passages. We modeled each of our responses as short answers, so when testing time comes around, we’ll be ready!

Other than the PowerPoint, my favorite part of the bundle are Deb’s task cards. Friends, these things are gold. Don’t believe me??? Well, I own her theme, text structure, perfect verb, figurative language, AND point of view task cards! Why are Deb’s task cards different? Well, they always meet the Common Core standard for 5th grade. So many times task cards meet the underpinning standard, but Deb’s always take it one step further asking students to compare, describe, identify key words, etc. Her POV task cards are no different. You can see us are using them at my teacher table during small groups. We’ll later introduce them as a pocket chart sort next week and possibly as playing cards for a board game! Task cards are SO versatile. Plus, when April hits and we are hard-core reviewing for our state testing, I can pull out all of our task cards from the year and we’ll have hundreds of review questions to get our brains working!

Well friends, a HUGE shout-out to Deb for making our POV learning so complete. From technology to group writes to task cards, I feel like my kids got a really complete look at point of view. We’ll assess this week using our district’s Common Assessment and I cannot wait for students to show what they know! 🙂 To connect with Deb and learn more about her amazing classroom, check out the links below!

This is a great giveaway and a great opportunity to learn more about products on my wishlist 🙂
It is crazy to me that you do not have a defined curriculum – I go back and forth between thinking that is horrible to thinking maybe it is a good thing. Have a great week!
